Research & Thought Leadership

Pietro’s research centres on two core areas.

Strategy, operations and performance: He has led extensive projects on the design, use and impact of performance measurement systems, identifying how these mechanisms drive — or hinder — strategy implementation and organisational improvement. His work is published in leading journals including Academy of Management Journal, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Public Administration Review, Long Range Planning, and Management Accounting Research. His current projects explore how measurement processes shape an organisation’s ability to innovate, and the role of AI in complementing traditional measurement approaches.

Innovation and technology management: Pietro has conducted significant research on design thinking, agile methods and digital transformation, particularly in the context of product development. His findings explain why design thinking works, when it doesn’t, and how organisations can use it effectively. His articles have appeared in top journals such as Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Research Policy, and Journal of Product Innovation Management. Ongoing work includes research on design thinking, ethics and sustainability, and the impact of AI — especially GenAI — on creativity and innovation processes.

He has served as principal investigator on projects funded by EPSRC, NIHR, the Design Council and several private and public institutions. His research outputs include 40 peer-reviewed articles, three books, four reports, six case studies and 28 business articles. As of October 2025, his work has been cited over 9,500 times on Google Scholar (h-index 30) and 4,250 times on Scopus (h-index 25).

Pietro is Associate Editor for the Journal of Product Innovation Management and the International Journal of Operations & Production Management, and Consulting Editor for the International Journal of Management Reviews. He has received 12 research awards, including best paper prizes at the Academy of Management and EurOMA, and the “most impactful paper of the past five years” by the Journal of Product Innovation Management.
